In Farm City, Novella Carpenter says “Every second-rate city has an identity complex. Oakland is no different. It’s trying to be more arty, more high-tech, more clean than it is able.” But by a page or two later, the (dysfunctional) love affair with her new city has begun.

In Berkeley’s nifty next-door neighbor, Oakland today: Greenpeace activists protested Pizza Hut’s affiliation with Sinar Mas, a palm oil, pulp and paper company in Indonesia, responsible for illegal deforestation and orangutan habitat destruction.

    Just finished reading Farm City, a memoir of a woman who raised veggie, bees, turkeys and pigs in a lot near Chinatown in Oakland. I was really delighted by the local aspects.
